Out of My Mind - January 25, 2006

Happy New Year, everyone! Can it be possible that January is almost over already?

Big happenings at the Stroud household this month: First, I have a new dog! Her name is Lynnie and she is a 4 year old Boxer. She was rescued from a puppy mill in Lancaster County, PA. If any of you are interested in adopting and helping these wonderful dogs, please go to www.adoptaboxerrescue.com. Lynnie is the second dog I have gotten through boxer rescue and they do a fantastic job. Lynnie came home with me on January 16 and is doing fine--and the cats are settling in with their new (much larger) sister.

Before Lynnie came home, I made a trip to Florida to visit friends and had a great time! We went to the Lowry Park Zoo and that is where I took the photo of the eagle and the manatee. You actually can see the manatee from a glass underwater observatory. The zoo is a rehabilitation site for the manatee; they are so gentle and graceful in the water. It's amazing to see them up so close. The rest of the zoo is also great fun--we saw a baby elephant and baby orangutan, each about 4 months old. Rose rode a camel, and we both fed the giraffe--his tongue is long and slimy and his breath really bad! I tried to feed the sting rays but all I got was wet! Luckily I was dried off before the chimp threw dirt clods at us!

One day we went to Tarpon Springs and had authentic Greek food, a boat ride where we saw dolphins and a trip to the Sponge Factory where they have a video of how sponges are harvested and their many uses. The last picture for this time is of Rose and me wearing sponge hats (they're not really hats, but don't they look like they should be?)and me carrying a finger sponge as a "bouquet". What a blast!

Now it is back to winter weather, cold and windy. And quilting. Hopefully you are all keeping warm (or cool) where you are and are making lots of quilts. There's nothing like the feel of cloth in our hands, with needle and thread to make something beautiful. Enjoy!
